COD farming company Johnson Sustainable Seafood’s (JSS) celebrate the release of
the one millionth record codling from its hatchery in Sandwick.
Not only is this the first time JSS has produced so many fish in one year, but
also the first time this quantity of juvenile cod has been produced in the EU.
Another 450,000 fish are set to be put in the sea before the end of January.
This level of production has been achieved in advance of full development of the
hatchery, to be completed later this year.
All codlings are bred from selected brood stock at the world’s largest dedicated
organic cod hatchery.
Their brand NO CATCH…JUST COD is certified by the Organic Food Federation and
recommended by Greenpeace.
JSS’s hatchery & research manager Lesley McEvoy said: “Producing our one
millionth cod for the year highlights the quality of our production process and
commitment of our team.
“Steady production of these top quality cod juveniles is vital to the long-term
development of sustainable organic cod.”
Managing Director of JSS Karol Rzepkowski said: “This is such an achievement.
Given the huge challenges any new industry presents, to be able to produce
juvenile cod in such numbers in their first full years production is testament
to both the dedication of our hatchery team and the high calibre of personnel
involved in the hatchery project.”
