THE FUTURE of Whalsay’s main employer has been secured after Shetland Islands Council agreed a support package for Whalsay Fish Processors Ltd.

Councillors met yesterday morning (Friday) behind closed doors to discuss the options available.

No details of the deal have been released yet as Whalsay Fish has first to comply with a number of conditions before the funding package can be released.

Development committee chairman and councillor for the north isles, Josie Simpson, said he was confident a way out of the crisis had been found.

"I am happy that the council have made a decision to support this company, which has been a major employer in the isles for forty years.

“However, the funding is subject to a lot of conditions which need to be met by the company before we can conclude arrangements, and confirm details".
