A LARGE cargo ship carrying coal from the USA to Poland went adrift off Shetland after her engines were shut down early yesterday morning (Friday).

At 7.45am Shetland Coastguard were warned of the problems on board the 31,500 tonne Maltese-registered bulk carrier Lindos by the coastguard in Torshavn, on Faroe, as she approached the Fair Isle Channel south of the islands

Engineers worked through lunchtime on the problem with the 18 year old ship’s engine cooling system before managing to regain power around 2.45pm.

A coastguard spokesman said they would be monitoring the vessel as she continued eastwards, in case they needed to call in the Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s emergency towing vessel Anglian Sovereign, which was standing by in the port of Scalloway.
