THE SCALLOP Association is to join the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation today
(Thursday), to become the organisations ninth constituent member.
Scallop Association secretary John Hermse said the move would help protect the
scallop sector at both national and European level.
Three Shetland businesses are believed to be among the association’s 80 members,
which include 15 processors and two diving firms.
Mr Hermse said major issues affecting the organisation included their efforts to
reduce their “environmental footprint”, and they were researching new types of
fishing gear.
The Scottish Government is currently drawing up a Scottish Fisheries Scallop
Strategy.
Bertie Armstrong, SFF chief executive, said: “We are delighted that the Scallop
Association is joining the federation and that it recognises the benefits of
being part of the SFF.
“The scallop sector is an extremely important part of the fishing industry,
which has signalled its commitment to responsible fishing and sustainable
development.”
