EIGHT students from Scalloway's NAFC Marine Centre were rewarded for their
academic achievements and hard work with prizes awarded by Alistair Carmichael
MP.
Robert Shearer was presented with the Bells Nautical Trust shield for
exceptional effort and endeavour by a deck cadet and a cheque from Bells
Nautical Trust.
The North Star Shipping Prize was awarded to Russell Anderson for the most
outstanding achievement by a marine engineering cadet.
The Class 1 Deck Officer (Fishing) Prize this year was awarded to Shane
Abernethy for his performance both in the classroom and the final examinations.
The Jeanette Williamson MBE Memorial Prize for Navigation (Class 2 Deck Officer
(fishing)) was presented to Raymond Fraser who showed exceptional dedication in
his studies and was rewarded with excellent grades in the final examinations.
The SVQ Level II fishing vessel support (Seafish) award was won by Kenneth Gray,
who impressed staff and his skippers with his hard work and application.
Highest scoring student in the Officer of the Watch examinations was Ian
Anderson, who received the Forbes Watt Prize for Navigation - Merchant Navy OOW,
500gt.
The Tammy Laurenson Prize for Engineering was awarded to David Laurenson, in
recognition of his achievements in fishing vessel engineering both in class and
in his certificates of competency examinations.
And finally, local apprentice Mark Odie scooped the Castrol Prize for
Engineering. Currently completing his final qualifications, he was chosen for
the award because of his dedication, putting in the best effort and showing the
most promise overall.
