Celebrating
100 years of the Fishermen’s Mission in Shetland 1907 - 2007
Four Key Events .... Watch this Space for more Details
1.
NOSTALGIC BUS TRIP…….following the herring trail……to East Anglia
As part of our 100 Year Celebrations of the Fishermen’s Mission in Shetland this
year, we have organised a Nostalgic Bus Trip to East Anglia. We are following
the herring fishing trail and visiting key places associated with fishing, as
well as having some time to view the area.
This trip takes place from Monday 24 September to Friday 5 October.
The trip promises to be highly interesting and a real nostalgic look at hey days
of fishing and herring.
Two treats in store for us will be a welcome by both the mayors of Great
Yarmouth and Lowestoft. The media in East Anglia has also shown great interest
and Anglia TV (ITV) is filming some of our visit in Great Yarmouth.
On our nostalgic journey down we will be stopping at Eyemouth Fishermen’s
Mission for lunch, North Shields Fishermen’s Mission for afternoon tea. We will
be visiting Grimsby National Fishing Heritage Museum. We will based in East
Anglia for six nights. We will also be linking up with Lowestoft Fishermen’s
Mission.
2.
Stanley & Suzanne Manson are presently walking the Great Wall of China to
raise funds for fishermen and their families in the UK. All proceeds will go to
ROYAL NATIONAL MISSION TO DEEP SEA FISHERMEN.
It is hoped to raise Ł40,000 which will allow the Mission to provide the care
and compassion our fishermen and their families so desperately need.
Stanley and his daughter have had an amazing response to sponsorship with most
of money already in, showing clearly generosity of Shetland folk.
3.
Launch of “Da Fishermen’s Mission”
As part of the 100 Years of the Fishermen’s Mission in Shetland we have been
compiling a booklet aptly named “Da Fishermen’s Mission”. It chronicles early
beginnings of the Mission right up to present day including incidents that the
Mission in Shetland has been involved with over the years. It has photographs,
both b/w and colour.
The foreword is by Jonathan Wills who is no stranger to the work of the Mission
in Shetland both in his professional capacity as a reporter and in his capacity
as a friend and valued supporter.
A LAUNCH DATE for this has been set for:
WEDNESDAY 21 NOVEMBER 2007 AT 7PM
VENUE: COMMITTEE ROOM, STEWART BUILDING
