THE SCOTTISH Shellfish Marketing Group (SSMG) is removing all hydrogenated fats
from its products after recommendations by international food health
authorities.
These fats are artificially created by a chemical process involving the
hydrogenation of oils and are commonly known as trans-fats.
This process solidifies the oil, limiting a body's ability to regulate
cholesterol, and is considered to be harmful to one's health, possibly leading
to obesity and heart disease.
SSMG managing director Donny Gillies said: "Trans-fats are commonly added to
bakery and dairy products to extend their shelf life.
"But with no nutritional value and a link to increasing heart disease many
consumers have been turning away from any product linked to trans-fats."
