SALMON farmed in Scotland is among a list of 10 European foods whose
authenticity is being guaranteed in a trade agreement between Europe and China.
The agreement recognises and protects quality products with geographical
identity. Other products on the list include cheeses, ham, olive oil and plums
from France, Italy and Spain.
A list of 10 Chinese products has been presented in return for registration in
Europe.
Scottish Salmon Producers' Organisation chief executive Sid Patten said: "This
is fantastic news as it is further recognition of a quality product that is in
demand at home and around the world. The unique trade agreement may be the first
step in developing an exciting, new market."
There are more than 750 food and drink products recognised by the European
Commission in the EU's Protected Food Names Scheme.
Under this system a named food or drink registered at a European level will be
given legal protection against imitation throughout the EU.
