24 May, 2007
FUTURE challenges facing the Scottish fishing industry will be discussed at a
seminar in Glasgow on Friday.
'The Trouble with Scottish Fishing' seminar has been organised by the Scottish
Fishermen's Federation (SFF) as part of the Fishing 2007 exhibition at the SECC.
SFF chief executive Bertie Armstrong will tell the seminar that no matter how
good the state of stocks are, the industry will always face challenges to ensure
the sustainable harvesting of fish in future years.
Mr Armstrong will say: "The major immediate challenge is to ensure we achieve
realistic
catching opportunities for 2008."
Also speaking on the day is Professor Michael Kaiser from the University of
Wales. He will give a presentation on marine spatial planning and its role in
fisheries management.
Dr Dick Ferro of Fisheries Research Services will talk about co-operation
between fishermen and scientists, while John Watt of SFF Services will give a
presentation on the close working relationship between oil/energy operators and
the fishing industry.
